The Eyeliner
by Bianca Brad
I was saying that the
liquid eyeliner is a part of a more sophisticated makeup, firstly
because the perfectly drawn line requires a lot of exercise and also
because of the result. There is the compact powder eyeliner, which is
applied with a lightly damp brush, and there is the liquid eyeliner,
which must be “shaken” before use. It is very important that the
brush should be thin, but not too soft.
The charcoal
liner, that I talked about in the previous issue, is the most
frequently used. In antiquity the eye contour was extended closer to
the ear, the line being parallel to the base of the eyes, and later
on it included several patterns with mystical significances. For
instance, it followed the shape of eagle eyes, which was a sacred
bird for the Egyptians. You probably wonder why I talk about
antiquity makeup when you are actually interested in the rules
applicable today. The reason is that even though we live in the 20th
century, I happened to notice Cleopatra-like make-ups in the street…
I know that one should not comment on people’s tastes, but I feel
bound to say that this type of makeup is completely obsolete. It may
be good for a carnival or for the stage (so that viewers from the
last row can see it), but not for the day-to-day life and not even
for evening wear! Therefore, in this case, as in the case of the eye
shadow, you can make the eyes look smaller, bigger, closer together,
wider apart, higher, longer, rounder, etc. All you need is a good
liner, a sure hand (which can be obtained through exercise) and, for
the beginning, a guide to show you how to do it. The video “The Art
of Makeup” will help you here, explaining why one should keep in
mind the shape and even colour of the eyes. There is a lot of
information, and all you have to do is watch carefully and remember
what suits you.
